Service // Justice

Description

Summary

Service Reflects God’s Heart

  • In this message on the spiritual practice of service, Pastor Jonathan used Micah 6:8 to explain God’s invitation to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.
  • Serving others meets their needs while also shaping us to become more like Jesus.

Righteousness, Justice, and Loyal Love

  • Tzadeqah—righteousness: Living in right relationship with God and others, treating every person as an image bearer of God with dignity, honor, and respect.
  • Mishpat—justice: More than punishment for wrongdoing; it includes protecting vulnerable people, confronting oppression, and helping restore those who have been harmed.
  • Hesed—loyal love: God’s faithful, enduring love, which motivates us to reflect His character.
  • Pastor Jonathan shared that following religious rules can still miss the heart of righteousness if we hurt people or fail to love our neighbors. These practices flow from salvation through Jesus; they do not earn it.

Jesus Shows Us How

  • Jesus restored dignity through healing a woman on the Sabbath, touching a man with leprosy, and raising a widow’s son.
  • Jesus welcomed Zacchaeus, a dishonest tax collector. That encounter led Zacchaeus to give generously and repay those he had cheated.
  • These stories demonstrate the importance of seeing people beyond their circumstances and remaining available to respond with compassion.

Start with One Person

  • Pastor Jonathan celebrated the church’s meal-packing outreach and departing missions team as practical expressions of justice and service.
  • He acknowledged how comparison can make meaningful service feel inadequate: another church’s ability to do more does not diminish what God invites this church to do.
  • We cannot solve every problem, but we can help someone through a meal, friendship, generosity, advocacy, or an invitation to our table.

This Week’s Invitation

  • Pray: “God, open my eyes. Who around me is experiencing injustice, and how are You inviting me to help?”
  • Take the next faithful step with the time and resources you have, trusting the Holy Spirit to bring transformation.
