Service // Holiness and Unity

Description

Summary

God’s Grace Shapes How We Live

  • Pastor Jonathan presented Ephesians as a vision of a community empowered by the Holy Spirit. Chapters 1–3 establish our identity: adopted into God’s family, saved by grace, and united through Christ.
  • Chapter 4 explains how we live in response. Holy living flows from God’s grace; it does not earn our salvation.

Protect Both Holiness and Unity

  • Holiness means belonging to God, being set apart, and reflecting His character.
  • Unity means remaining joined together in Christ through humility, patience, gentleness, and love. It allows for different backgrounds, personalities, and preferences.
  • Pastor Jonathan emphasized the challenge of protecting both: ignoring sin damages holiness, while rejecting people over every disagreement damages unity. Stories about people leaving over donuts and paper towels illustrated how preferences can divide believers.

Speak Truth in Love

  • Jesus demonstrated how to address sin while extending grace, as seen in His encounters with the woman caught in adultery and the woman at the well.
  • Loving others includes difficult conversations about gossip, dishonesty, anger, and other destructive behavior. These conversations should help people grow, with humility about our own blind spots.
  • The Holy Spirit guides us in what to say—and the right timing, attitude, and approach.

Our Relationships Reveal Jesus

  • A church that practices holiness and unity displays God’s wisdom and helps the world recognize Christ’s love.
  • Pastor Jonathan connected this calling to the armor of God in Ephesians 6: resisting division requires spiritual preparation and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

This Week’s Challenge

  • Pastor Jonathan challenged the church to embrace an opportunity to speak truth lovingly this week as an act of service.
  • Spiritual formation happens together. Even when we make mistakes, we can keep growing in grace, truth, and love.
